Default Reman Engines

hello to all,
This is my first post on the site. I currently have a '05 F-150 King Ranch (5.4L 3v) and thought that I could get away with doing time chain, oil pump and etc to get it back on the road. After digging in and taking the valve covers off I found my camshaft caps bunt (on the passenger side) and the #4 cap literally broke in half when I went to take it off. I was hoping that I could then just get away with just buying camshafts but found that my passenger head was FUBARed (lol) which leaves me at looking at a replacement engine. I didn't want to buy replacement heads at $750/$800 each side only to find out that the crankshaft is screwed because of the metal flakes from the camshafts. I tried doing some research thru this site and found Frasers Engine and had them send me their quote/flyer. They range from $2600 for the Japanese internals (3yr/100k mile warranty) to about $4k for one with all the upgrades (5yr/100k mile warranty). My questions to everyone is are there any more manufactures out there that make the 5.4l 3vs?

thanks in advance,
True

I'd rather have a junkyard engine than reman. Check out ebay.

Why? Besides the probable cost benefits, who knows how well the engine was maintained. If you're going to be removing and replacing the engine, in my opinion its better to have a new/reman in there so you know the service history from the get go.

I had a PowerTrain reman installed in my 2004. Works great. Make sure the rest of the truck is worth the expense though. Look for major rust and a good drive train.

I have a Ford reman engine in my truck. Warranty company insisted on Ford reman, and since I wasn't paying, I didn't argue. Father in law swears by Jasper engines. He runs maintenance shop (mechanic) for USPS. He buys a lot of reman engines, and says they are the easiest to deal with, and have the least problems of the ones he deals with. USPS never buys from Ford or any other company like that due to cost. Ford Reman was a couple grand more than Jasper or others.

Ford doesn't make/remanufacture the 5.4 3v....others do it for them. AER is the primary remanufacturer and they supply Ford and most of the other distributors. I bought mine from Powersource out of Memphis, but,. there are numerous others. The only real difference is the warranty.

I did a LOT of due diligence before I pulled the trigger and have been VERY happy with the result. My truck drives like a new one nowadays. I just pulled an 8k # camper 250 miles and it was a non issue. (other than mpg which stunk....hehehe)

I put a Ford reman in mine last year which was built by Fred Jones Enterprises. I got it at wholesale for a good price. The warranty is the same as the others... just do your research and make an informed decision. The Spartan/Surefire/ATK doesn’t seem to have a good track record so I’d recommend staying away from them.

I often wonder what it'd feel like to have a new engine in my truck

Well, obviously it depends upon the condition of your present one SCORGE. Mine had 276k on it when it kicked a p0016 code and started spinning misfires at hot idle like a slot machine (could NOT feel them). I'd long before done my due diligence and was prepared to replace my engine once timing issues reared their ugly heads. It simply made no sense to me to ATTEMPT to fix an engine with that much time and mileage on it. The cost to fix vs a quality AER reman made it obvious to me which way to go. Almost 10k miles in and I have zero regrets.

I also contemplated going to the auction and snagging a '10 - '14 Raptor....seriously considered it. However the risk of simply buying somebody else's former problem was too rich for my blood. Plus I tow a bit and my present set up is supposedly better and I FAR prefer the original saddle leather King Ranch interior. As a result I decided to look upon my present truck as a base to construct what I like, so I did it.
