Default Recommendation on a high perf starter

Guys,

The starter on my '06 F150 with a recently rebuilt 5.4 triton runs great but the starter just crapped out. I'm looking to replace it with a better than OEM high performance piece. Any recommendations?

Mike

If the oe starter made it 19 years, why not just use a new one of those? Planning keep the truck another 20 years?

i semi recall a recent thread that claimed that a (stock) starter from a newer model truck (different motor) fitting and supposedly being an upgrade in performance. sorry i can’t recal specifics.

No such thing. Just get a MOTORCRAFT replacement unit and know you have another 20 years of life in it at least.

Yeah, just get.a new motor craft, don't overthink it.
That other thread was claiming the starter from a modular 5.0 fits but I don't know the details as to whether it's smaller or has more torque or anything.

What other parts did the mechanic not replace on this rebuild?

@Mike06 https://www.f150forum.com/f4/06-5-4-...dation-569958/

that is the recent thread discussing “upgraded” starter option. post 9 links to the details. note: i have not done this mod/substitution, so can’t vouch for it myself. if i was replacing one though, i might check into it.

side note; there was once a similar suggestion related to using a superduty starter in a pre-superduty 7.3 (diesel trucks), i did take that suggestions and tried it. it was a Major upgrade, bolted right in and for some reason was actually cheaper than the “correct” model starter.

My buddy who owns the shop where the truck is after it died (I had it towed to him) said he has had no problems with the new (not rebuilt) starter from the auto parts store so I told him to just put that in. I usually prefer OEM/Motorcraft but I'll see how that one does but if I have any doubts I'll swap it out next time I get a chance. I'll order the motorcraft one and have it as a backup so I'm not stuck on the road again since I always travel with tools and a jack and stand.
