Default Receiver problems

Anyone have problems with their receiver splitting out while having a weight distribution hitch attatched? I have a camper I pull that gives me a combined weight of 12560 with 5400 on the camper axles. I replaced the receiver tube and reinforced for under $50. Ford wanted $480 for the receiver assembly.

I think you are exceeding the tow capacity, so, the components break when that happen.

"With a maximum tow rating of 9,900 pounds and maximum payload capacity of 3,000 pounds, the F-150 is the most capable full-size pickup under 8,500 pounds. "

what exact model do you have? year? http://www.fordf150.net/specs/05f150over.php

Would this mean that the remainder of 7160 pounds is the tongue weight on the hitch? This would be too much weight on the receiver.

or the truck axles. the way I see it, 12560 - 5400 (trailer axle) -5800 (curb weight of truck) = 1360 on hitch should be about 800 over rating. for a class 3 hitch.

I should have been more specific. 7160 was the weight of the truck on the scale with the camper hooked up, but not on the scale. I should have weighed the truck with the camper unhooked to give me a tongue weight. They say a rv has a tongue weight 10-15% of the axle weight, so I sould have a tongue weight of 540-810lbs...

In that case I'd say there's something wrong with the receiver. Might want to remove it, unless the welds/reinforcement you had done have corrected the problem.

Yours is the first post that I've read here with this type of a problem.

These are the pics of the mod. I made the receiver tube 1/2 in longer and put a 3 x 3 x 3/16 plate on the back. I noticed a 99 and 01 f250 had this reinforcement plate.. Hopefully this is an isolated case. I've owned Fords since I could drive.

Clean welding work too! That upper plate should do the trick. This is going to make me look at my Reese hitch to see if perhaps I should do this mod (upper plate) as well.

Thanks for posting the pics!
