Default rear differentials

Has anyone heard of issues with the rear differential of the 2004 Ford F150? Specifically, I went in to have the synthetic fluids flushed and filled and I was told the spider and pinon gears were "pitted." The truck has only 76,000 miles on it and about 90% of those are highway miles with very little use of 4 wheel drive. Has there been issues with the premature wearing of the real differential gears of the 2004 F150's? I have the Lariet version.

Wow! Think I might have the same problem. I havnt looked into it yet but what mine is doing is the reason I believe I have a problem. I feel a vibration and hear a humming noise when I sometimes step on the gas and it seems to be coming from the rear of my truck. How do I began to fix this problem?

I have the same problem also, i changed the diff oil and added ford friction modifier and now it howls like a wolf. I'd like info on this also.. mine is an 04 with 83,000 miles and I am pretty sure the oil was original because the transmission oil was.

Wow, this really sucks. I've had three ford trucks in past years and never have I had to replace the differentials. I wonder if this may turn out to be a recall item from Ford. It costs about $2000 to refurbish the rear differential gears. Maybe Ford replaces them with new ones but either way, it sure sounds like a design flaw or a materials issue. Maybe they are using softer, cheaper steel lately. Not sure what I'm going to do but I sure plan to raise hell about it with ford service.

Thanks for the reply.

I didn't hear the humming noise but the mechanic says he can hear the humming noise. The only way to fix the problem they say is to replace or refurbish the bearings and gears. It's about a $2000 job.

I had my rear diff replaced under warranty at about 40000 miles.
1000 miles later a C clip fell out ,they fixed that. Now at 85000 the other C clip has deteriated and fell out.
Without the C clip the only thing holding the axel ,hub and tire and wheel from coming out in the two small
Bolt that hold the caliper.
It destroyed my caliper , rotor and brake pads.
I was pulling a 16 ft trailer at the time so it could have been bad !
Right now it is tore apart in my driveway.

Whoa, you are getting taken for a ride by your mechanic. You could get an entire new axle for that. And you can't even hear it? A set of gears only runs a couple hundred bucks new.

DO NOT OKAY THIS SERVICE!!!

I went to Tireplus couple weeks ago to get a differential service at 60k. He said he heard the humming sounds( i couldnt) gave me this long story about me needing a whole new rear axle. for like 2g used and 3500 new. He got done with the differential service and told me to take ride with him and told me " I got lucky!" lol. The only thing he said was I need to take off my big tires and go stock. I am never going back to tire plus again lol.
