If the outside looked like that.. I wonder how much RTV got into the gear oil... you are supposed to let it get tacky prior to mating the cover for a reason.

No, it's not a lot. It's actually the proper procedure to put a 1/4" bead of RTV down. It will squish out like that.

Wiping it away can pull it out of the cover ruining your gasket.

None since you let it cure before you fill with gear oil.

I take it ya'll have never done RTV gaskets before lol
Watch this video if you think this is too much RTV -

I have done plenty of RTV gaskets.. that was not cured when the bolts were drawn down.. it would of never oozed out the bolt holes.. that’s not a 1/4” bead..lol

According to the manual the gasket should be 1/8 to 3/16" in size. Yeah, 1/4 might be too much, but as long as it's cured it won't get into the gears.

Looking at FordTechMakuloco's gasket. Mine and his look almost identical.

I'd argue that the pic I posted is a good looking gasket.

I bought the OEM gasket for the differential cover. Is RTV sealant better than just the gasket? Can I use both?

I just use RTV silicone. Permatex Ultra Black is my favorite. The problem with using both is that the silicone acts as a lubricant and the gasket wants to squeeze out. If you do use both, just tighten the bolts slightly, until you get a uniform bead of silicone showing around the edge of the cover. Now let it cure overnight and then snug it down.
