Realistic Trade in value?
I will be starting to look at trucks in the next few weeks. I will be trading in my 2008 f150 fx4 x-cab.I would like everyones opinion on what a realistic trade in value would be for me truck, KBB says 20k, which i think is way too high. Here are the specs:
2008 f150 fx4
red/dark shadow grey accent
leather seats w/flow thru console w/floor shifter
43000 miles
tow package
sliding rear window
There really arent any other options, i bought the truck without any options. There are hardly any scratches on it, new tires, its in excellent shape.

I flirted with a sales rep about a month with a 2011 Ford Explorer for my wife and he quoted me 19K, on paper...it wasn't word of mouth. I know that's high but I almost took it, but I need a truck.
I have a 2007 FX4 SCAB
- Basic options plus 35 gallon tank 20" wheels
-100K
She has some love, minor dents and dings around the bed and doors. I'd honestly aim high and settle around what KBB offers, my previous truck was a 2002 Dodge Ram with a 5.9L, 2WD, Regular Cab, and a bed cover. NOBODY, wanted that truck...KBB said 5,500K and I traded it in for 7K. So it can happen , be patient and be prepared to walk away...

I have always demanded more than KBB trade in value because they always seem low to me. When I bought my '05 F150 I traded in a '96 Explorer, they wanted to give me less than $2,000, KBB trade in was $1795, and I ended up getting over $5,000. Of course they started the price of the F150 high, KBB retail, but bottom line was that I paid what I thought was a good price. Since I bought it I have not regretted it and have not seen too many better buys being made. I think it is still a buyer's market so negotiate and take your time. Another option would be to sell your F150 and work with cash at the dealer, one of the places where paper is stronger than steel.
^ That's odd... usually KBB estimates average about $1500 high on everthing. Dealers don't use KBB for that very reason. NADA and "Black Books" are bibles in a car dealer. I worked for Volvo for 7 years and Dodge for two years before that.
I am trying to justify if its worth trading on a newer one. I would love a 2011, but the rebates arent that high and that would keep a new one out of my price range. A 2010 used with low miles would be ideal for me. I love the looks of the FX4's, especially the interiors, but no more painted bumpers me and no two tone option is keeping me away on the FX4's. Going to look at an xlt with the chrome package. I only have 43k on mine, I love the interior and the leather seats, but the 5.4 with the 4-speed tranny is just pathectic, along with the gas mileage. I am getting about 16-17 on the highway cruising at 65, load up my 2000k bass boat and the mileage drops to 13-14 highway. Any decent incline I have to floor it just to pick up any speed. The powertrain by far is the most dissapointed thing about the truck. I hear better things about the newer ones and even the 09-10 with the 6-speed tranny.

WOW! KBB has my truck listed at $23K in "Good" condition for private party, and $19.5K for trade value. Much better than I expected.
NADA has the truck at $24K for retail and $19.4K for average trade in. And NADA has my truck listed as a 4.6L not 5.4L.
Of course my 2006 only has 38K miles, so that helps the price considerably.
There goes Lenn's idea that NADA is typically lower than KBB.

I actually just read an article that said that the difference varies from region to region and dealer to dealer. Some use Black Book, NADA or KBB while some just solely use one of them. Black Book apparently specializes in "vehicles of interest" or rare vehicle pricing.
Things have evidently changed from when I was in the car biz.
I just checked the trade in values on my Equinox and my wife's Mazda 6 and KBB and NADA were the exact same for both. Oddly, both cars were valued identically, too. Hah.
