rattle on startup
Hi everyone
I have a 2004 f150 with 50k miles on it. A few thousand miles ago I switched from conventional oil to syn blend. Prior to using the mc blend and mc filter I didn't have a rattle on start up. On my next oil change should I go back to conventional? I believe the rattle is caused by the tensioners bleeding down. I have also had the phaser knock for 25k. This rattle only lasts for a second. Should I replace parts now? Go back to conventional oil? I'm running 5w20. Always have. Thanks for replies. I have 5.4 3v

Any oil wearing the Ford Certs it these days is a blend of some kind. MC is a well formulated oil and has been a bargain for a long time. I'd be more suspecting the anti drain back valve in the filter as the issue. These are nothing more than a silicone flap that keeps the oil in the filter and not draining back into the engine. It's not like it's ever going to be a 100% item. If it makes you more comfy, I'd change just the filter and top the oil off.
Definitely stick with the motorcraft filter. Conventional, full syn or syn blend is an discussion with no end.
Personally I've been running 5/30 full syn for 104,000 miles. Switched right after my warranty expired.

Yeahbim just wondering where its coming from. Not sure if its the tensioners or lash adjusters. I heard if the solenoid gets hung up it can restrict oil flow to the head. I believe this channels oil thru the solenoid valve body. Maybe I have a faulty filter since its been doing it since oil change.
