Default rattle at start up??

When I crank my 05 5.4 truck it makes a rattling noise it almost sounds like chains. It only does it when its cold. Any help on what it could be.

tensioners is a pretty common problem for these trucks. Everything expands when hot so that could tighten everything up enough to get rid of the noise.

Its just a one time thing when it cranks. So I'm not sure. Is tensioners something I should be worried about?

mine also does it. As soon as it starts and it's cold. It's almost sounds like there's no oil in the motor. Only last for half a second then goes away

Thats how mine is. I know theres oil in there though bc I just changed it less than 1000 ago. Were gonna check the tensioners, belts and bearings this weekend. The sound just concerns me.

Get a stethoscope and check it out before you dig in too much. Could be a bad bearing in the alternator or something. Way easier to check around with a stethoscope than pulling everything apart to check chain tensioners.

Were gonna check belts and pulleys first. What all could go wrong that would be making that noise? Should I lay off driving it until we check it out.
