Default Random engine stumble / miss

Good morning guys,
I was hoping someone from this section could help me. My XLT 5.4 is a 2010. That leaves me with only two years worth of 5.4 owners to help in the 2009 and up section due to the 5.4 only being available from 2009-2010. Im not getting any help and was hoping maybe you guys could assist me.

My truck is freaking driving me out of my mind.

It seems to have an intermittent temperature related miss, stumble, random dead spot in the RPM range, or even a torque converter lock up even a transmission issue. I cant put my finger on it.

Its a 2010 XLT screw 2X4 5.4. AEM CAI, true dual exhaust, new 3.73 gears from the stock 3.15, and SCT 5-Star tune. 50k miles.

The miss does not seem speed or RPM related it only does it when in full operating temperature.

This all started about 6 months ago with engine stalls at idle in drive, such as: at a stop light. Only when engine is hot. It did this once or twice month. It would not restart unless I let it sit for a while and the exhaust would smell like raw gas. It never had to do with just filling the gas tank. After a while, I learned to get it going to get back on my way. I floor the gas and start it. It starts and i hold the RPM's at 3k. Anything less than that and it stalls. Once "cleared out" by a few good revs, and everything is ok.

I got a new air filter (never the oiled type), cleaned the MAF, and replaced the purge valve/solenoid because of the TSV that said gas tanks were imploding, bending fuel pump rods, and stuff. I tried all my strategy tunes, custom tunes, and stock tune and its all the same.

The miss seems to be timed. When the event occurs, it lasts the same length of time every time. About one second. Also, the time between events are the same. As if its some kind of cycle. It almost feels like its the torque converter locking up. Like its locking up at weird times. When i drive it in 1, 2, and/or 3 it does it the same. I read somewhere that the valve body solenoids or valves go bad and the torque converters lock up in idle stalling these engines. Here is the best way to describe it. Imagine a hand held push button ignition kill switch with wires that run directly to your ignition. Now imagine a buddy sitting in the passenger seat pushing that button over and over at random times but in a rhythm. Anyway from what i read, this is common with the 5.4.

Please help. Im getting freaking tired of FORD's common problems like stumbling, vibrating, shaking, and all that garbage.

There are no codes and no check engine light.

Do you/have you ever power washed your engine bay?

Do you get fuel from the same place every time?

Yes, I wash the engine bay often.

No, I get fuel from many different locations.

I was going to clean the TB and change the plugs, but at 50K miles, i dont think that will be an issue.

This could be your problem, especially since you say you do it often. You very well could be getting water down in plug holes and around the COPs causing an intermittant misfire especially after the water wams up down in the plug hole and steams up in the to the COP.

I would pull your COPs out and use some compressed air to blow out the plug holes as well as COPs and let them sit overnight so they dry out completely before reinstalling them. You do not need to pull the plugs out now, but at 50k I probably would swap them as ford is now recommending 60k for life span on the MC plugs (atleast for the 04-08 anyway) and you already have the COPs off anyway.

I would also clean the TB and MAF as that is a normal thing for me to do every 50k miles or so.

New air filter, clean MAF, cleaned TB, returned tune to stock, and redid the idle relearn. No luck yet. Still runs like ***. Symptoms getting worse yet no check engine light. The transmission slips then hits hard in all gears. The down shifting is rough. The torque converter is engaging and disengaging at weird times.

my dads 2010 had tranny issues. especially when slowin down it would slam from like 5th to 1st. I think it is a known issue. might call the dealership near you and ask if they need to do an update to your computer.

have you pulled the cops off to see if you have any moisture?

If this is tranny related, I think the 04-08 crowd has different trannys than you if I'm not mistaken.
