Default A.R.E. bed cover removal

Just curious if anyone on the forum has ever removed one.

If so, are they heavier then they look? I'm thinking I'll have to have a buddy help, so I don't risk scratching anything. Ideally, I'd like to take it on/off at will eventually. Does it help with gas mileage or is the reason for it all cosmetic? I personally don't care for it, but think it would be cool to use to keep rain off luggage and what not while traveling.

I have one that I take on and off. It's not to heavy but definitely a two man job.

Open the cover, lower your gate, pull the metal tab holding the piston in place on each side. Pop the piston off ( you'll need someone to hold the cover at this point. Carefully lower the cover, climb inside and undo the four clamps holding it in place. Slide it away from the bed of the truck. Putting back on is what sucks.

Lots of times I want it; lots of times I don't. I scored mine on craigslist for $250 so I try not to complain to much.

Why not just leave it locked in the closed position and undo the clamps. I have to take mine off in a couple of weeks. I have never taken it off but this is how I planned to do it.

It appears the previous owner has put a lot of double sided tape down before laying on the cap. I guess he did it to protect the top edge of the bed rail or to keep it from taking in water. From what I can see, the cap overlaps the rail everywhere and the tape doesn't seem needed. Perhaps it slid around on him after it was clamped? I can't see the reason for the tape and am starting to wonder how messy it will look after I take off the cover.

It appears I have an excuse to buy some hex shaped screw driver heads...

Do any of you guys see a need for the tape he had on there? Does your cover slide? I'm thankful he took good care and consideration with the truck though.

You sure it's tape? Mine has a black padding. The padding is sticky on the side that attaches to the cover.

Mine leaks a little but my bulkhead is also bent.

No, I'm not sure it's tape at all. Just visually looks like doublesided tape. I haven't attempted to take it off yet. Really just waiting on a buddy to show up and help me. It could very well be padding, it just seems like there's more (like 3 or 4 layers) of it near the back window. I'll let you all know how it goes when I take it off.
