Default Quick Idle Question

Why does idling for a extended period of time kill gas mileage and seem to burn more gas than actually driving?

^ well that and watching my gas gauge go down lol. But thanks for the answers. I do paintless dent repair and sometimes have to keep the truck rubbing because I have stuff plugged in I.e power inverter and such and don't want the battery to die. Also keep the truck warm inside as its 30 degrees in Chicago right now lol. Thanks again.
