Hey guys I'm looking at putting LEDs in the air vents. I've read that I need a 5 inch strip for each vent. My questions are what kind of strip? Do I need the side shine LEDs like people use on headlights like the Audi. Or just regular face mounted strips? I don't want them very bright just a nice orange glow. My other question is what ate people wiring them to? In fairly good at wiring stuff up I just didn't know what people were tapping into? Parking lights dome light. Separate switch? Thanks guys

 

I would say that your norm led strips should be fine if you are putting them deep inside so you cant see them. As for where to wire them I would think that wiring them into the ignition and then through a switch would be the best. That way they would shut off and turn on by there self and if you want them off you could turn them off. If you go with dome light then they would only come on with the doors open. If you want them to be dimmer you wire two lights in series so they would be half bright. I was looking at doing red and blue and change the color based on the temp of the air but thats about as far as I got.

 

I used a single led bulb. I drilled a hole into the vent tube then fit it with a rubber grommet. Then I slid the led bulb into the rubber grommet for a nice snug air tight fit. I wired a multi circuit accessories switch i bought from pep boys to my parking lights. Right behind your headlight switch so they come on whenever your head lights or parking lights are on. I can also shut them off from the switchboard if I want.

ok that sounds like a good idea to have them powered by something constant like either ignition or parking lights but to still have a switch if I want them off. thanks for the help guys. I think im gonna tackle this when I get the time and a few bucks to go buy the stuff I need. the hot/cold idea sounds awesome idk how to make it happen but sounds awesome haha. im trying to go for the whole orange look inside the truck to match the steering wheel cover and the new head unit I got.

 

Another question I have is, I have seen some newer model cars putting a small single led in the top center console area on the roof by dome light and it simply shines down onto say the shifter or cup holder area just giving you a small bit of light to see while driving. it is on whenever the lights are on. what kind of led do you think that they are using there?

 

Friends Mazda 3 has one and I thinks its on all the time.

The ones I used were just a single led bulb with a positive and negative wire. You can pick them up offline or a auto parts store. I put two below where my ash tray and cup holders slide out from the dash. There's a little cubby compartment below that pops out and you can mount the led's there so they shine on your beverage in the cup holder and illuminate it. It also lights up the middle of the seat. I will try to post pics this afternoon.
