Pulling a trailer
I need some advice and quite frankly some help. I have been told that my 2004 F150 SCrew has a towing capacity of 8200lbs. I have 5.4L and 3:55's. Im looking at buying a travel tralier that empty sits at 7300lbs. How many of you out there have towed with in this range? How did your truck do? Hills? Help me out!
7300 empty for the trailer..that would be around 8000 full.
My trailer is rated at 5400 empty but full is really around 7500 (it's a toy hauler) but anyhow water is real heavy.
A friend had a 3500 rated trailer but when he weight it ...it was 5000 with only the fresh water tank half full and almost nothing else.
I towed a 8500lbs travel trailer(recently weighted while loaded) and it was really limit with my truck (5,4 3,55 too) to make a test...and it was going well until I had to go down a big hill and the trailer start to sway....was really happy with that.
I would tow more then mine actually 7500 lbs with a 8600 rated truck.
I seen people to races towing really big travel trailer...way more then I would.
like a 10000 gross weight rating with a f150 4,6l thiking that the trailer wasn't at that weight...
Most of travel trailer are way too low in the weight number.
Always used the gross weight rating...not the dry weight.

5k would be closerto it. where will you pull hills, mountains, flatland ? makes a lot of difference. from your sparce info it makes it hard to tell you anything other than 7k is a lot of triler to put on a f-150. i tow 5k with an 01, 5.4, 3:55 with no difficulty anywhere. brake controller(required) tran cooler, equalizer hitch. doing theight trailer with the wrong truck is no fun and wight get dangerous to you and anyone around you in a hurry. good luck!!!!
I have a 2004 f150 5.4L Super Crew. I have an edge Evolution tuner. Im looking at buying a travel trailer weighing aroung 6000lbs. I live in PA and there are hills and mountains. My truck does have a brake controller.
I just purchased a TT that supposedly weighed 5500 according to dealer. Sticker was faded, I liked the camper so i purchased it. Well after a CAT scale when I got home she is at 7000 with a full water tank and not much else. Truck handled it good through 427 miles from Alabama to East TN. I kept it at 60 or less, have a WDH and Anti-Sway bar, and of course electric brake controller. Truck is an 4.6L with a Gryphon, Trans cooler, Gotts Mod and Flow Masters. I could tell it was there, but it didn't overwork the truck, temps stayed good on the engine and tranny and I could pull it 55-60 without any problems. It will work until I get another truck in a couple of years.

The 3.55's might make the engine work a little harder on hilly roads, otherwise you should be fine, 5 to 7k. Have your hitch checked out. Do the ebrakes and bigger tranny cooler. I had a hitch that actually rusted so it was too thin. Go figure!
