Default PTM Side Mirror Skull Caps

Hey guys, got a project I have been kicking around and I think I might try it. I have a 2004 Lariat with the power and heated non-tow mirrors. So, I picked up some exact-match E4 Vermillion Red spray paint and clear coat. But, do you think it would be best to pull my OEM skull caps off and paint them or buy the chrome overlay caps and paint them? The OEM ones are the pebble-textured ones where the $15 chrome caps are smoother.

How hard are the chrome ones to paint? It seems like the smooth sheen of those would make the paint not adhere real well.

Thanks for any opinions/info!

They look real good, man! It's hard to see in the pics, how did the finish turn out? Are they glossy and did they semi-smooth out after the coats?

After a couple of good coats and a couple of coats of the clear, you won't be able to tell they used to be textured. The only bad thing about using the chrome would be, you are gonna have to sand them down to get the paint to stick. No point in paying extra when u already have the paint and clear to paint the caps of ur existing mirrors

Alright , cool, that's what I was thinking to begin with. So, now my question is, how do I get those caps off without taking the whole mirror off the truck? Anyone know of a good write up on here?

You have to take the mirror lens off to gain access to the caps. You can leave them on the truck but theblens needs to come off

How do you remove the lenses in the regular mirrors? Mine are unfortunately not tow mirrors.
