I have a bunch auto wetordry sandpaper I use, 200 grit up to 2000 grit.

If you just clean and paint them they will look like **** and look very flat and poopy.

Here is a guie: http://www.6crew.com/forum/showthrea...es-Tail-Lights You'll see what they look like with no polish or clear.

Older pics of mine:

The work is all in the prep and elbow grease you put into them.

80 is way to rough. That's what I use at work to strip paint with. I'd probably use 600 spray a couple coats of color then clear over. Not neccessary to sand between every coat.

I agree.

Well your buddy must've done something wrong. I've retrofitted several vehicles and I've done numerous posts about halogens vs HIDs in halogens vs quality retrofits vs factory HIDs on RamForumz. Log in as a visitor and search for my threads in the 2003+ Ram 1500 forum and you'll see my write ups with pictures to compare.

There is a reason why luxury vehicle manufacturers offer HIDs are standard equipment. They really are better than halogens. LEDs will eventually replace HIDs but for the time being mainstream HIDs rule the lighting world.
