My power steering pump needs to be replaced. I don't see much about power steering pumps on here, or any DIYs on it.

Has anyone replaced this pump? From the little I've found, the bolts seem to be a bit tricky.

 

Straightforward to replace, but tricky to get a wrench on the bolts. A good ratcheting wrench would be helpful as you can't get a socket on it.

I found that you have to leave the bottom bolt (there's three bolts in total - 2 on top, one on bottom) until last as the pump has to come off as you unbolt. If you try to do this bolt first it'll bottom out on one of the hoses.

How hard are the hoses to remove?

 

And does anything else need to be removed in order to get to the pump?

 

Fan and shroud, steering pump reservoir and bracket. Intake hosing. Serp belt.

It *might* be easier to access the bolts on the pump if you can pull the pulley off. Mine was too tight and I couldn't fit the impact into the space to get it off.

Sorry, missed first question. Getting hoses off is easy. Only one is threaded and if I recall correctly, you need to have the pump off to undo it.

It's really pretty straightforward once you start taking stuff off to see it.

When you remove the clutch fan, try to keep it standing up. I heard you can mess the fluid inside if you set it flat. That might be rumor, but I wouldn't risk it.

Accessing the pump is the only pain in the *** with this job.
