Poll time. Cam phaser/ fatal engine issues or not?

2005 F150 5.4 3 valve
Yes, new cam phasers at 167,000 miles. Blew engine 3 years later at 221,000, passing a truck on the highway, no check engine lights only "check gauges" wording on odometer/outside temp reader. Regular Amsoil oil changes. If I knew then, what I know now, I would have never bought a 2005 F150 with the 5.4 3v engine. Now I have a 2006 F150 with a 4.6 engine.

You used Amsoil, it's not even a properly certified oil. And I also wouldn't be surprised that you floored it and the engine revved to 5000RPM in first. That would cause any engine of that age to grenade.

2005 F150 5.4 3 valve
Amsoil was what the mechanic told me to use after he replaced the cams, oilers, ect. Before that I was strickly a valvoline customer. He is a very reputable mechanic, only one certified in our area for diesel smog test as well. Has worked on all my trucks. I've drove that road a million times, passing semis and never had a problem before. It was a shock at first, she had been running fine, slight tick, but not nearly as bad as before the cams were replaced. No warning at all! No check engine lights, nothing. Not my first Ford truck. Still have my 98 F250 supercab with 438,000 miles and had a 2001 F350 crew cab before that. (Not a diesel fan, too noisy). I'm not replacing the motor, I'm parting her out. Stripped off my tommy lift and new tires for the 2006. Thought about replacing the motor, but have no faith in the 5.4 3 valve between the years of 2004-2010. Too many problems with that engine and they want too much money for them compared to other Ford motors, demand vs supply. I'll drive the 2006 for a couple of years, retire the 98 F250 as backup and move up to a 2014. I average 20,000+ miles a year. I do miss the power of the 5.4 but the 4.6 only has 154,000 miles and I only paid 4500.00 for it, less than a reman engine in the 2005 would have cost me, installed.

other than the cost I've never read where Amsoil of the proper weight has ever done anything negative to an engine...I don't spend my money on that oil but not being "certified" does not mean it doesn't meet or exceed what would have otherwise made it certified i.e. if they had paid the fee to get it certified...
anyway...sorry to read about your engine dying and I hope it's replacement runs for a long time for you...

New engine at 270k.....p0016 code.... Could have done a full timing job, but it made more sense to replace.
Prior to that I replaced the VCT's around 250k...
Prior to that it was flawless...

I'd either replace the engine or cut my losses if she lets go
I'm not investing a couple grand+ into a timing job for this engine

Code P0016 indicates that a discrepancy has been detected between the timing of the crankshaft and the intake camshaft sensor (of engine bank 1) that exceeds 10-degrees at idle. Note: The “A” identifies the intake camshaft, which is located to the intake side of the cylinder head.
Think the position sensors are bad?

is there any service bulletin or ford bulletin that tells you to change your phasers if they are knocking. I have an aftermarket guarantee that needs something in writing from ford to do so

2006 4X4. 99k miles as a work truck, probably with a lot of idling with the A/C on. Just bought the truck recently, and when I first crank it after it sits a couple days, I can hear a slight, brief racket from loose timing chains, then it stops as oil pressure increases to normal. I'm not going to mess with it. If I had researched the 5.4 3V before buying, I would have stayed away from them. It's on Craigslist, but have not had much interest even after lowering the price twice. Looks like I'll end up putting it on Ebay and taking it in the shorts. Worst vehicle purchase I have ever made. Folks on this forum have been quite helpful, and I appreciate it.
