Default Pinging in a 4.2

Maybe you all can see this. I have a 2008 with a 4.2 v6. It was pinging pretty good. I replaced the plugs, and wires. Then I replaced the EGR valve with a Motorcraft part. Still pings when I hit the gas hard. If i hit the gas light its not as bad. I have a OBD-II diagnostic and it says EGR bank 2 failed. Im stumped.

Try this clean up your Mass Air flow sensor and do a seafoam treatment I've had to do this on a few 3.8 and 4.2 motors they are carbon magnets this is a major part of whats causes pinging carbon buildup.

Did you also make sure the plumbing for the EGR was clear when you changed the EGR? Is the EGR recieving good vacuum at the appropriate time, if your valve uses vacuum. A blocked CAT can also cause that too.

The EGR on mine has a stepper motor on the bellows. There is also a vacuum line on the valve itself but I dont know what it does. The EGR bolts right up to the intake manifold right next to the area where the snorkel from the air filter pigs in. Im wondering if I should take the snorkel off and see if there isnt a wad of junk in the hole that goes from the EGR into the manifold.

It would only cost you a gasket to look for carbon build up. I had a passage blocked about 80% one time with carbon.. If you can get the EGR to open while idling, if the passages are clear, the engine should die right away once you do it.

Default tried this

If anyone is interested I took the snorkel off and then I took the main throttle assembly off. the plate was totally covered with black gunk. Then I took off the tube that the EGR valve bolts to that goes into the intake manifold. It was totally covered with carbon. Took some carburetor cleaner and cleaned the tube and the throttle plate. Good news is the truck runs great. Unfortunately it still pings a little. I then put some Chevron fuel cleaner with Techron in the tank. Maybe this will help.
