Default Performance Mod...Which one to do first??

I am looking into doing a performance mod to my 04 with a 5.4. I am looking at An Edge Evo programmer, a air intake system, or an exhaust.

Which one do you think would give me the "best bang for my buck"

Hi.

Don't waste money on a Edge EVO unless you plan on upgrading it to a PHP Gryphon to run custom tunes. The canned EVO tunes are quite suboptimal in comparison (and cannot correct the MAF TF for a CAI if you insist on using one).

Honestly - fer the same $$$ you can get a fully custom SCT X3/SF3 flash programmer with 3-5 tunes included in the price, depending upon selected vendor - VMP, MPT, 5Star, Troyer, JDM, and PHP ( yep - they do SCT custom ).

IF you insist upon an EDGE product, buy it direct from PHP - you will get a break on custom tuning costs. www.gopowerhungry.com.

As fer the CAI and exhaust - no perf gains there - fer sound and looks only. The stock intake and exhaust already outflow the needs of a stock engine. I'd redirect that investment towards the programmer, IMHO.

99% of the gains will be derived from the custom tuning.

Been there, done that. Got the t-shirt.

BTW - the very next mod? While not cheap, it should be gears. If you've never driven a truck on stock diameter wheels/tires and gone from stock 3.55's to 4.10's, or 3.73's to 4.56's ( or even 3.55's to 4.56's - my fave) it's like a completely different truck - in many ways a more significant upgrade than a programmer ( except fer the programmer's vast improvements in reduced Open Loop delays, throttle control and shifting - worth the price alone). So crank up that piggybank, lol.

I'd say programmer but then again, I may be slightly biased. :-)

Problem with those two are -

PHP no longer can custom tune them - entirely Edge's fault.

And that is a huge indictment against Edge , IMHO.

They have effectively devalued the units as they are now dead-ended - and can no longer run fully custom tuning in support of mods that actually require adjustments an end-user cannot access (e.g a CAI on a slot-style MAF truck)...

I will admit however the hardware is nice - and as long as you stay stock ( no cams, CAI's, blowers, or longtubes ( which benefit from O2 transport delay adjustments), and have never driven a custom-tuned truck, you won't know what yer missing.

Gauges are nice too (but you get those on a SCT Livewire , or can run a Scangauge with an SCT X3 ).

Lastly - cost-wise - you can pay the same or even less and go fully custom SCT - with far superior results.

Just my opinion folks - please do not get bent. I'd call PHP and discuss this directly with them before buying an Edge product.

TRUE and I completely forgot about SCTs new X4 coming out soon. My edge may be getting sold when the new SCT rolls out

I don't want to sound like I am attaching your statement but do you have any evidence to back up this part of what you said?

Do you have data to back this up or is this just personal opinion?

I cannot speak for our trucks specifically but for others I have seen the numbers on some tests that do show improvements in both HP and TQ.

I find it hard to believe, looking at the stock design of both intake and exhaust, that there are no gains to be found. I would certainly like to see one way or another so if you can back this up that would be great.

Thanks
