I have a 05 F150 SC 5.4L 4x4 Lariat. Has 190K miles. All basic matainance done, regular oil changes. Only major issues where rear diff went out and catalytic converter. Maybe a few misc minor issues.
It needs rotors and brakes done.
Out of the 190K miles 130 of it was highway driven.


Well something happened and Ford said that it looks like your timing chain slipped or something broke in there, so for all that with camphasers it will be 2600 to fix.
However, once we tear it apart there could be more issues which means could cost a lot more.
When you start it you can hear something broken and will run for a few seconds then die is what he told me.


If we tear it apart and find other issues and you don't want to fix it, it will cost 1600.00 for the tear down and you need to remove it.


My dilemma is do I gamble and hope its just the timing chain pay 2600 and be done with it or gamble and if I lose I have to pay 1600 and am stuck with a dead truck.
I have another car that I call my Gay car(13 ford focus) that I use for work and driving around town. I should also add I have no money

I should add is what happened was my son put it in R to back into the driveway and then it sounded like a rod went with all the banging/clicking, he immediately turned it off. I went out and tried it and heard it and turned it off.

Ditch the stealership and find a local, reputable shop. Second opinions can't hurt and you can save some serious $$$ by going to an independent shop.

If you have no money then you can't afford to higher someone else to fix or figure this out for you.. I suggest you tear into this truck yourself, discover the problem, learn how to fix it, then fix it....

If the rumors of your issue are true and you did jump a tooth on the timing then that's good! This issue is very fixable, and the info is everywhere on this forum..
Pull one of the valve covers off and check the timing chain for slack. Check the black plastic guides to see if they are broken or missing. You can even check this through the oil fill cap... If the guides are broken then they are sitting in your oil pan and likely blocking the oil pump pick-up screen.. So if the truck sounds like its starved of oil, then you probably DO have this issue...

Parts for a full timing set overhaul should cost you around $500 - $600. Stick with OEM ford phasers, do not by the dorman phasers. They are junk!

I just went through this same deal in November. Timing chain guide broke, jumped a few teeth, pistons made contact with valves and bent the valves. Had to replace timing chains, guides, phasers, tensioners, and get a head job on passenger side. $3400 all in. Best of luck man, I'm sure it can be done cheaper, but my back won't allow me to be under a hood for 18 hours.

I Have the money to fix what's the current diagnoses but not for much more. I can fix dirt bike engines but am clueless on any of newer cars (late 80's and up)

Yea I just found a Ford shop a few miles behind me, that has solid good reviews with many that say he is a fraction of what the stealership I took it to. I am going to talk with him tomorrow.
I have to have a truck. I do a lot of things with it(home depot, dirt bikes) and cant be stuck with a "Gay car".

I had a stealership near me quote me "A minimum of two hours of labor to get it off, plus at least another hour of labor to get it back on, maybe longer depending on what we find when they get in there." ------ to replace a shift ****. It was some outrageous figure like $250 they wanted to charge me. It literally took me 5 minutes in my driveway to figure it out.

I called up to the same dealership about a month later and asked them for a quote for the same job. The guy on the phone told me they would just do it for me for free if I brought the truck in. I then asked him why then was I quoted $250 for the same job a month earlier, he told me that is the correct "book value" for the job.

Screw stealerships. Never going back to one unless the cost of the repair is not coming out of my pocket.
