oil pump replacement on 5.4l 3v question
#11
This is everything I pulled out of my oil pickup tube...
I had loose chains like you and didn't think I needed to check my pickup at first, but now I'm glad I did. If you're sure the chain guides are broken then you'll most likely have slivers of plastic in your pickup. I also had hunk of silicone and a piece of aluminum that broke off the timing cover from someone tightening an idler pulley too tight, so you never know what you might find floating around your oil pan.
After removing the valve covers and timing cover, it wasn't much more work to remove the oil pan - assuming you have a 4x4 like me, just let the swaybar swing down after removing the bushing bolts and remove two bolts on the front axle. That will give you just enough wiggle room to pry down on the axle so that you can drop the pan down and straight back.
P.S. I went with the Mellings 10340 pump. Not sure if it really made a difference, but I've seen some interesting videos about it and I gave in to the marketing hype.

Thanks again for the picture and mine is 2 wheel drive and I am not sure how taking the brace off that is there would have effected the caster if it would of.

Thanks for the information. This truck has never had any work done on the engine before. The guide was split at the lower connection through the 2 holes but no pieces were missing. The more I take apart, the chance of leaks. I have a Ford Dealer near me that if you go in they charge you one price, and if you go to Fordparts.com, you get a price almost 40% off! I was not getting pressure in the cooling system and checked and found out it was the cap. Looked the replacement up and it was 7+, went in and they said 12+. I mentioned that it was suppose to be 7+ per their ford parts.com. The person behind the counter asked where I got the price and I told him that per the Fordparts it said their dealership was selling it at 7+. He then said the prices shown on the site are lower and if you tell them they will give it to you for that price. So I got the new cap for 7.32! Thanks again for the picture and mine is 2 wheel drive and I am not sure how taking the brace off that is there would have effected the caster if it would of.
Thanks for the tip with Fordparts.com, I might try to convince my dealer to price match the next time I need something.
