Default oil pressure @ start up

My 08 as about 20000 miles on it and Ive always noticed the low oil pressure flash on the cluster for a second when its cold.

Do yall see this too??

i think this is normal for a lot of vehicles. my SBC Late model motor jumps about 20lbs of pressure after it has been running for about 30 seconds. Just takes time to get pressure built all though out the motor. Id double check your oil level and make sure you are running at least semi-synthetic 5w20 with a Motorcraft filter. Also the gauges on our cluster are not ment to give a specific reading as to where they are pointing, just that they are pointing in the "Normal" zone.

this is why its a good idea to let it run for 15-30 seconds after you start it before you take off....make sure it is full of oil before you start pulling a load on it.

i get this on my mustang

on the truck, i get a check guages message on the data screen if i turn the key on and pause a second before i crank it

i think both are normal- theres no oil pressure in the crankcase when the truck is off so the message is right... thats why its the most damaging cycle to the engine always leave it running for short stops!

I don't see it on my 2005....I have the 4.2 V6 with 86K on it. Oil pressure at startup, cold or hot always shows at the halfway mark on the guage, and never a flash of any light.

in the v6 the oil has about half of the way to flow also.

do you think by putting some kind of an motor heater on the motor help increase oil flow therefore increasing pressure at cold start up?

I'd think if this were the case, Ford would have a higher flow oil pump in the V8's.

If the original poster is using a higher viscosity than 5W/20, then I'd say that's his problem. 5W when cold to assist in oil flow when cold, 20W when oil/engine warms.

the oil pump for the v8s does actually flow more than the 4.2 motor. just because its the same lbs of pressure does not mean it is the same volume of oil. the 4.2 uses the pump as the 3.8. the 4.6 and 5.4 share a larger volume pump.

the v8s move about 20% more oil. probably at the same oil pressure give or take a few lbs as a 4.2. and as someone that builds 10 to 20 motors for racing from ford pony stock 4cyls all the way to an all-aluminum 434 sbc motors i know the basics of oil flow.

hold the 4.2 pump and pickup up to the 5.4 pump and pickup and tell me that that 4.2 flows as much oil as the v8s.
