It isn't the speed sensor because it still records the speed and mileage, it just doesn't show on the lcd. There's a problem with the cluster itself.

Add me to the list of victims. My odometer went blank on me this past week and never came back to life. Must be one of those 'special' features Ford added to this model so we wouldn't have to watch our beloved rigs grow old.
No way I'm forking out that kind of cash for a repair, but if I want to sell it there's no way I'll get what it's worth now. I have only 70K on it, but now it might as well be 170K, or 500K for all a potential buyer knows.

I hope this doesn't happen to me.

Id probably try to find a lariat cluster with the mpgs and stuff built in from a junkyard.

Default 15 minute EZ (and free) odometer fix

Good news! I've found an easy , free fix for this issue. I got the idea by reading a previous post where a member removed his terminal connections at the battery and cleaned them. The problem probably wasn't fixed by cleaning the electrical connections, but rather by DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY. This basically rebooted the computer. I removed the neg. connection and left it off for about 15 minutes, then hooked it back up and bingo, the odometer/compass/temp display was back up and running.

Hope this saves a few of you many hundreds of dollars in unneeded repairs. I'm thinking the dealership would just do what I did and charge $500-$700 for the fix. Not that I'm cynical or anything.

That would have been the first thing I tried.

LOL I figured that if someone was looking at 6-700 dollars in repairs that they were way past that.

That's good to know.

I have the same issue with the blinking display. At first it just blinked off every now and then, now it finally got to the point where it is off all the time and occasionally blinks on. If you search E-bay or even Craigslist you will find companies that can fix the original cluster. From what I know the small LCD display is replaced. The going rate seems to be about $100 - $125. The ones I found on Craigslist look like they repair many different styles of cluster for dozens of car/truck model. They also guarantee the work, but it is Craigslist so I will definitely check them out before I let them work on the cluster.

Just wanted to add when the cluster does blink on the mileage is increasing, and seems correct, so there most likely is nothing wrong with the cluster just the display. Other people may actually be having problems which may require replacement of the custer itself.

I don't think its the sensor because it records the mileage. When it pops back on, the mileage is still what I would expect it to be with our driving. Lately it's been on more than off though, so we're just leaving it alone. Not worth the cost to fix it.

Even though this is an old post, I'll comment that the speed sensor for the 04 to 08 F150's is internal to the transmission. You won't be able to change it easily like a previous post here said you could do on an Explorer to possibly correct the problem.

If you're on a tight budget, consider locating a cluster on Ebay; they can be had for cheaper than a new one, with the only exception of getting the mileage flashed; it is against the law to tamper with the mileage, meaning installing a cluster with lower mileage than the one your currently running with. About $100.00 to have the mileage re-programmed into a new/used cluster.
