Default O5 5.4 engine missing/rough running

I have an 05 Supercrew 5.4 4x4 with 62k on it. I recently noticed that sometimes under acceleration usually between 40-50 mph, it begins to run very rough almost like the tire/s are out of balance but I know they are not. The engine appears to really be missing at times. I feel a shake/vibration in the steering wheel and on my feet. I know there were some problems with these trucks concerning the fuel injectors. I am thinking it might be that it needs a tune up with plugs and maybe coils. It does not always run rough but noticed it happening a little more lately. Has anyone else experienced a problem like this with there truck? Please help me with this, I really appreciate it!

I am at 60,000 on my 05 fx4. I have had 3 injectors replaced it stopped the truck from running rough. I dont want to mess with the plugs yet.

I would say you got a bad plug. Personally i had good luck with changing the plugs. I would go ahead and do a plug change. Yes they are rated for 100,000 but the main problem is the carbon build up, so the earlier the better.

I have been told about the carbon build up you are talking about. The previous owner advised me that he had one of the fuel injectors replaced and covered by Ford because there was a recall and I have the recall notice and information that he passed on. I will start with the plug change and go from there. Thanks for your responses!

Jeffreymd2, were your injectors covered by Ford due to the recall notice? Just curious.

They were covered by my warranty. They try to get me to pay a deductable but i have had so many things break on my truck that I dont pay. I think it has been in the shop 15 times.

Default rough running engine

I have the same truck and I can tell you from my own experiance it is the
injectors. My truck would run rough once in awhile and over a period of a
few months it got worse until number 8 injector failed in the open position.
The cylinder filled with fuel, snaped the piston in half as well as the connecting rod and it all got ground up in the crankcase. Thankfully the
dealer put in a new longblock at Ford's expense under the extended warranty (120,000 mi.) for the injectors. Good luck.

If I took my truck to the Ford dealership would they be able to use diagnostic equipment to determine whether or not one or more injectors are going bad? Hopefully, they can so I can have the problem fixed before it creates a disaster like JW150's story. Thanks!

When my coils went out, the unburnt fuel combusted inside of and melted my catalytic converters on the drivers side. Make sure to check it out, the shop said the clogged cats caused extra strain on the engine, and causing more coils to go out. Make sure your injectors were not the ones that dumped too much fuel into the cylinders, because I have heard of this scenario melting the cats as well
