Default o/d fail need advice

I have an '04 f150. 5.4 extended cab. As I was driving, o/d just stopped working. No warning. My rpm just increased. I now have no o/d at any speed or rpm. Anyone know what is going on

that the clutch band for OD is shot, as in no friction material, as in you lost OD and need a rebuild.

do you have any friends with repair shops? Check greenleafauto.com, they are recycler with a semi-local network....and frequently are somewhat eager to wheel and deal on low mileage transmissions. that way, you can get a decently fresh one, put it in, and reduce rebuild downtime.

This may sound crazy but it's worth a try. Take a bottle of brake fluid and pour a cap full then put it in your transmission. It doesn't take much! Just a small cap full off the bottle of brake fluid bottle. If it doesn't patch it then try one more cap full... if it still doesn't fix it, it's toast.

The idea behind this is the rubber seals around the clutch packs get old and hard causing an internal leak. The brake fluid causes them to swell and closes the leak going to the the O/D clutch pack. Hopefully you didn't burn off all the clutch material which is pretty much construction paper thin.

This doesn't always work, but I've seen cars go as much as 15,000 more miles before the transmission went out. It's worth a try as it doesn't cost anything and it's a last ditch effort attempt. Good luck!!
