Default noise from wheel

i have a 2005 fx4 . i have been hearing a high pitched squealing noise coming from the r-front wheel. it sounds like the old style brake pad squealers rubbing the rotor. when i put the truck in 4-wheel drive high the noise goes away. the truck is never used in 4 wheel drive. noticed a popping noise when i backed up. the noise is not constant
. need help from you ford guys.

If it goes away in 4wd, then I would check your IWE solenoid and associated vacuum lines. Quite a few people have reported problems, especially those without the "updated" solenoid that has a plastic cover to prevent water from getting in.

Your IWE solenoid controls whether or not your truck is in 4wd. It locks your hubs... I should more accurately say it unlocks your hubs. Your hubs will unlock when the IWE solenoid gives them vacuum. Thusly, if your solenoid, or vacuum lines leak, then the 4wd system will "fail" in the engaged state. This is great, safety wise (I would rather have 4wd than not). It also means that if there is a leak, one or both of your hubs may be partially engaging, which causes metal on metal rubbing (perhaps like a brake wear bar), it may also cause popping during backing up (like a bad CV joint).

This may not be your problem at all... but you can at least check to see if you have the updated solenoid (merely has a plastic cover that comes off the bracket that shields it from water coming from the top). If you don't, you can VERY easily put the updated one in. One thing I should mention: if you go to the dealer you can buy either the old solenoid or the new one. The new one is cheaper (~$26) and very obviously has the cover.

There are several great threads teaching you how to check your solenoid and 4wd system... here are a few related ones:
