Default newbie question

I have a 2004 5.4 and I have a ticking sound. I have searched and read post here explaning cam phasers and injector ticking. I also found a thread with a video telling you the difference but the link would not work. Does anyone know of a video of what the difference sounds like i have searched forever on you tube also.

Bad phasers are more of a knock or rattle sound rather than a "tick". Unless you have a check engine light, or are having other driveability issues, don't sweat it. Just use a good filter with an anti-flowback valve, and change the oil every 4-5k miles using a good oil of the proper weight. I prefer semi synthetic, but many on here use full synthetic, that's up to the individual. But don't add sht to the oil, or any other snake remedies for the sound. Don't use a heavier oil trying to mask the sound, it'll cause much greater problems than it'll help.

Good luck, and stay with the forum!

I've heard so much controversy on the thicker oil... I swear by it... I'm not talking crazy thick but atleast one weight thicker... Unless you live in a cold climate

stick with 5-20 wieght wich is what is called for , using thicker oil will cause you some other problems down the road, if you want a recommendation on oil, go with royal purple semi sin. its a little expensive but it is the best oil and filter on the market...great stuff

Not sure of the link your looking for. I also have an 04. It was well kept and is clean. I changed out the VCT 's and it made a difference. Gas mileage up by .8-1mpg and not sounding like the diesel tick. Mine was t bad though.

When the valve covers were off I was able to see mine was pretty clean for 80k miles. Timing chains were nice and tight so mine is gonna ride this way til an issue crops up.

Wanna add...stick w 5-20! Most 5-30 will shear to 20 weight anyway!! U we the pic of mine I posted. One owner prior always used 5-20 Penzoil Yellow bottle.

Me, I'm using MotorCraft synthetic blend 5-20 with MC filter at 4.5 - 5k oil changed.

Royal purple is about the WORST OIL... Don't believe me look for oil analysis of it... I hate when people buy into advertising and what "factory calls for" ... Factory is all about making money... Make it reliable enough to make them happy but break down to make them pay... Atleast that's how I feel... I love ford but they are going to do wht they have to keep up with competitors and of course meet emission criteria which is why they recommend te thinner oil... Less emissions...
