I have read all about Cam Phasers and valve noise with the 5.4, and I am hoping a slight diesel-like noise is normal. The only time I can hear it, is at a stop light with the windows up, radio off and no one is talking. With the hood open, or windows down, it sounds like a really quiet v8. Lots of clicking valves with my head under the hood, but nothing out of the ordinary(Or so I hope). It has a ton of power, and doesnt have any check engine lights on.
My '05 did this when I bought it about 6 months ago. I was ticked. I thought I had bought a money pit. I took it to the dealer and they said it was not the phasers. So I started putting high quality fuel in it and after about 2 months it finally got quiet. I found out that it sat for almost a year before I bought it. I think it was just bad fuel. This has happened to me with previous Ford vehicles I've owned.

I am betting mine is similar. Only sounds that way on the passenger side. ::shrug:: she runs fine and I haven't had any issues... so I am leaving it as is for now.
