Default New here. looking for opinions.

Hello everyone. New here. I have never owned a truck before.

My plans are to purchase a truck and a small travel trailer for my wife and I to enjoy some time to ourselves now that our kids are grown and on their own.

My son is a salesman at a dealership and I asked him to find me a good deal. He brought home a 2006 f150 4.6l 4x4 that he can sale me at costs. The truck has 90000 miles on it and is in great shape. Nor a bad deal at 11,000 dollars either.

My concerns are with towing a travel trailer. What weight can I reasonably expect to tow with the 4.6 engine?

Thanks for any help.

IMHO skip the 4.6 to tow anything more than 2000 pounds.

Looks like that truck has the 5.5 foot box with extra cab, which is rare. Usually that bed is on the supercrew. Where will you be towing? In the mountains or more flat lands? All depends on what u expect, if u are okay with slowing down a bit on hill climbs, I think it would be fine. Check the door sticker under axle code, if it says h6 it has 3.55 gears, if b6 it has 3.73 which are better for towing. I would stay under 5000 pounds.

Thanks for the replies guys.

jerrybizzle, I won't be able to check the gearing until monday but the truck does have some type of tow package. I will probably be towing mostly the eastern U.S. There are some pretty good hills though.

personally Im new to fords, but I work with a guy who has an 03 with the 4.6 and he's been happy with how it tows. And from what I've read on here the 4.6 doesn't have a lot of the problems the 5.4(which the one I bought 3 weeks ago has in it) has.....

If you have 3.73 gears you should be fine to 5K.

I had a 4.6 and I towed a full size tractor and trailer with bush hog around Georgia and it slowed down a good bit goin up even the slightest hill. I now have the 5.4 and I towed the exact same setup and it's a night and day difference. If you didn't mind slowing down goin up hills then get it but if you want constant speed up a hill I'd get the 5.4.

I'd be comfortable to 6,000 lbs. I've pulled 6,500 which is 400 lbs over the recommended weight for my truck and it was ok. Just don't be afraid to give er throttle.

Thanks for the help guys. By the way, I checked the door sticker and it has h9 which I think are the 3.55 limited slip gears.

id pick up the 5.4l. i have an 04 screw with the 5.4 and the 3.73 limited slip and it pulls like a beast. you get almost the same mileage with the 5.4 as the 4.6 but you can pull way more. if i were you i would stick with a 06 or later model. that way you can get away from the problems the 04-05 5.4L motors have
