ok guys heres what im facing right now... my truck sounds like a diesel and its pretty annoying but if it isnt going to hurt my engine then i will deal with it. i am going to be sick if i have to do a major repair on my new truck and if i do have to pay some major money to fix it i am gonna be so pissed off at ford, but i dang sure aint driving a chevy or dodge. and i found this too and it describes what my truck is doing.

VARIABLE CAM TIMING
The 4.6L 3V and 5.4L 3V variable cam timing (VCT) feature may emit a light knock in normal operation and is audible only at idle speed, with a hot engine (gear selector in park / neutral). However, it may be masked by or mistaken for other noises generated from either injector firing or a malfunctioning valve train as described above. The noise does not affect performance or durability of the part.

VCT phasers may knock at hot idle. It may be heard inside the passenger compartment, or the wheel well area. Some light noise is normal. The engine may require a cold soak overnight for a full diagnosis to effectively be made at hot idle, particularly when a VCT phaser is suspected. The knock is not prevalent at cold temperature.

i know its not right, because thats not what these trucks sound like on the show room floor and i will fix it it because im particular about the way my stuff runs but if its gonna be a WHILEEE before it does anything ill wait because right now i just cant afford to pay people to look at it and guess at whats causing the noise and hope certain parts make it go away. the reason this makes me so mad is because it sounds like ford is saying we have no idea whats causing the problem but we know it wont hurt anything. and they dont care about our 04's anymore so yea theyll charge us $2k to change some stuff and maybe make it go away.

I forgot did you end up replacing the vct solenoids? They are like 48 a piece and really easy to do...

I have them at home but haven't done them yet because I have to replace an upper control arm too, I'm gonna do both of those tomorrow. But idk it just sounds too loud to be a solenoid in my opinion. A guy said if you unplug the solenoids and it goes away, then they're bad. Is that really an accurate way to test them?

OK gotcha...I've heard of unplugging it before. Not sure if that would work. It makes sense in theory but I'm sure there's other variables...as for the noise being to loud I'm willing to be the seals on the tensioners are shot then...my brother gas an 05 with a very quiet version of the famous noise. Gonna he changing the vcts soon and go from there.
