dont recommend for the average joe mechanic, has very tight tolerances and stuff with shims and what not best left to a certified shop or mechanic

Unless you have a dial indicator and know how to set backlash and preload I would take it somewhere.

you can do it, if you got the right tools. not to be a dick, but if you aint 100% sure on how to do it/the concept, you can wreck your day in no time...i have seen more than 1 set of gears grenaded thru the diff cover, rear ends locked up tight..but if you understand the concept, go for it, just know the consequence of an improperly set-up gears. on the other hand, the only way to learn is do it.

try like 600 bucks at least, then add in all new gear oil, etc etc. take out your diff and have the gears done, then take the truck in for the rear and have it aligned while it's there, save yourself a bunch of $$$

i have done a few. it isnt that hard, but there are a few special tools. a pinon depth tool which can be had for under 100 bucks a and a dial indicator and magnetic base and a caliper. also needed is a bearing separator and torque wrench and lots of patients. so unless you have access to a way to press bearings on and off to replace shims and bearings you could have more invested in tools than what labor would cost to take it someware. if you still are interested in giving it a shot i have a PDF file i wrote up to help a few guys in the superduty fourms .
