I personally took my exhaust off and just added a 45° bend to the end and I like how it sounds

I am also in the muffler delete club. Personally I love the way it sounds but beware, your MPG's will be reduced.

I have a 2006 fx4 and someone did a crappy exhaust job on it before I got it (holes in the welds) and the cat is going bad on it so needless to say the exhaust doesn't sound good at all. Would it be better to straight pipe it? And if I don't like the straight pipe can I get a new cat and exhaust put back on?

Yes. You can get new cats. I like the sound of mine with the cats and no muffler. It sounds good in the truck. Sounds different outside. I'm debating a muffler for back pressure issues I believe im having.

So would you suggest keeping a cat? I know my cats going bad (despite the code it's throwing and check engine) because as soon as you step out my exhaust smells very rich and it makes a noise when I accelerate. But I'm afraid if I delete my cat, muffler and pipes it would smell even more

If you delete the cat, you'll have a check engine light. I would suggest just replacing it.

Back pressure issues is an old wives tale. Less back pressure equals better HP and TQ. The only time back pressure is an issue is with a 2 stroke engine.

If you are having issues it is not due to back pressure or lack thereof.

I am also in the muffler delete club. I replaced it with a straight pipe and put the tailpipe back on and get lots of complements on the sound. It is surprisingly quieter then most F150s with aftermarket systems and far cheaper, mine cost under $20.

To each his own.
