I took my muffler off months ago, put a piece of straight pipe in... Not a super rumble, but better than stock and no drone.

I did last summer. Just disconnected the mid pipe right before the muffler and took off the back half of the exhaust. I wouldn't recommend it though unless you want it REALLY loud in the cab. Put a HushpowerII resonator on and it helped a bit, just saving up for the headers and pipes right now to make my true duals.

Dynomax bullet is a relatively cheap muffler that makes it quite a bit louder than stock.

With half an exhaust and no muffler it's pretty freakin' loud. Especially inside the truck at highway speeds. Adding the resonator has quieted it down a bit and smoothed out the tone. If I had a video I'd post it but right now it's set up just to be legal in VA with the exhaust dumping under the bed instead of under the cab.

i'd be surprised if the lost back pressure (from cutting the muffler off) doesn't effect the performance somehow. this stuff is carefully balanced with engineering efforts from the factory, but....

I didn't have it dyno'd or anything but there definitely wasn't a loss of anything. I can't really say there was a gain except in volume though.
