Default Lost my overdrive

I own a 2004 (not heritage) F150 XLT 4x4 equipped with the 4.6l engine. This truck has been absolutely trouble free (except for an annoying squeak in the dashboard... lol). Anyways I was driving around the other day and without warning my O/D quit on my. I was cruising at about 60 km\h and all of a sudden is felt like it had gone into neutral. The only thing to get it to move forward after that was to disengage O/D. If I drive with the O/D off, it drives absolutely perfect. The fluid levels\color looks good. The truck has 151 000 kms on it which is not low, but it's been very well taken care off. It's never towed anything heavy. Normal wear and tear I guess.

I've been reading that the culprit is most likely the O/D Band. But I've also heard that it could be a solonoid? I'm not overlly mechanically inclined, but I'm assuming the solonoid would be located inside the transmission casing?

I'm going to take it in to a transmission shop to have it looked at within the next few days. But if I were to hook up a code reader to it, would I get a code for either the o/d band or a solonoid? What esle could it be?

Cheers!

I just had the same thing happen today, 2004 with 5.4L, I hope there is some info available. Seems like a valve body problem on mine because it was there and then it wasn't. Could be the converter as well I guess but I don't know for sure.

93000 miles on mine

a good transmission shop will be able to check that the electronics are working, that solenoids are switching, etc.

They may also be able to read pressure in circuits and diagnose what is not working.

If there is not a check engine light on, there is no code to retrieve.

To tell you the truth at that mileage you are probably better off having it totally rebuilt if it has to come out of the truck for a repair. Just watch out for the shop that tells you it has to be rebuilt without looking at it.

Default not true!

It isn't true about the check engine light and the code... I had a COP go bad and had a miss, the check engine light (which works) never came on, but showed a code of a misfire. Also there is a seperate set of codes for the tranny as well.

correct, there are hard codes (which set you chck engine light on) and soft codes (which do not set the check engine light on)

There is a ring clip on the OD that breaks rendering your OD useless and acts like a slipping transmission...its a fairly common problem from what i discovered. Had the same thing happen to my 05. Took it to the dealer and they fixed it...was an 1100 dollar fix...thank god for the warranty!

And it will not throw codes when this happens...

Default Broken Snap Ring

That is exactly what my transmission guy is saying. Either the band or the snap ring. His also said there were some upgrades that ford did later on with the reverse drum and one of the bearings that he would also include when he fixed it. O well, I plan on keeping it for another 100k miles so I guess I will bite the bullet. If I count my 98 F-150, then I got 280k miles out of both of them. Working for a company that builds transmissions in Germany, they all have one go bad sooner or later.

The band is another possibility but my money is on the broken ring from how many read about going bad. Bands usually take much more mileage or abuse to wear them out.

I had the same thing happen to my truck and unfortunately it turned out to be the O/D band. I had the whole thing rebuilt and it runs perfect again. Happened at 80000 miles
