Default loss of power while towing

I have a 2004(new model) with the 5.4. Truck has 164000 miles on it and up until this point has been a great truck. All preventative maintenance has routinely been done, second set of spark plugs put in at 140k, it has never leaked a drop of anything. Other then replacing parts that have worn out I have never had a problem with this truck.

The problem right now is I have all of a sudden lost power while towing my boat. Boat only weights about 2000# and when I go up any sort of hill I can put the pedal to the floor and I get nothing, no additional pickup whatsoever. Now I am typically towing up around 7-9000 feet in elevation and dont know if this factors into my problem or not. Without any load I can scoot around just fine with no noticeable loss of power.

Anyone ever have anything similar to this? My father who was a mechanic long ago seems to think the computer might need to be reprogrammed due to the elevation but I would think it should already accommodate for that since its EFI.

Im really scratching my head with this one.

You lose 18% off the top at 6,000', 25% at 8,000', 30% at 10,000'.

The computer will reprogram on the fly. What octane fuel are you using at these elevations? With a stock tune, should be 85 octane. Yes, 85. It acts like 87 at this elevation due to o2 content. You probably won't find 87

When was fuel pump last done? If you are not getting any codes and drives normal otherwise, it might be just power loss due to elevation but I'd prob dbl check.

Adding a blower makes its own atmosphere and power loss is still there though MUCH less.

Using 85 octane as that is pretty much standard out here, and the fuel pump has never been touched. is this something I should take a look at? what type of blower are you talking about?

Thanks for the info!!

FPDM will cause some weird issues. From no start to loss of power. Its simple to check and usually pretty easy to tell if its bad.

I mean its weird, other than the loss of power the truck runs and drives great. The last code I got was a misfire on cylinder 8 right before I replaced all the plugs and coils.

What is the rpm when this occurs? Is your OD off button pushed when you tow?
