Default Looking at trucks for a buddy

My buddy is looking at 04-08 f-150's any problems with the 4.6? I know all the issues with the 5.4 chains phasers plugs etc.. And would a XLT have connections for the sub under the carpet?

I have an 04 4.6 with 61k miles on it. These engines will run forever. I have had no problems with it in the 6 months I have owned it. Slap a tuner on it and it wakes the truck up.

I have a 06 4.6 with 106,000 on it no problems so far! What all maintenance wise have you done to yours? I'm hoping to get as many miles as you have and more! I've done plugs, flushed trans, differential, antifreeze And run motorcraft 5w 20 every 5k to 7k.

I have a 07 fx4 with the 5.4 but before this I had a 06 xlt with 4.6 I put 140,000 on it the only complaint I had was the spark plugs kept getting loose every 30,000 or so and one time it shot one out while I was driving down the road it did not do much damage though, but other then that it was very good to me.

have you had any issues with your 5.4? There isn't many 4.6's here mostly 5.4's

I just got the truck from my brother in law who got it from the company he worked for. It was a fleet truck that he drove. It was maintained meticulously by the ford dealer. If it was due for any sort of service it got it. Every fluid has been changed multiple times on the recommended schedule. The brake fluid was getting dark once and it was changed also. The records from the ford dealer is about 12 pages long. I think the only thing not regularly scheduled maintenance that was changed was the instrument cluster that was changed out. Since getting this truck and knowing the maintenance work that has been done, I am now a true believer in ALL scheduled maintenance. I have never owned a truck with this many miles on it. I love this truck.

If you have time for a story. I bought my fx4 used with 80,000 on it really nice and good price. The dealer was 1 hr 30 min away. I got it home that night and when I backed up in my drive way the engine started chugging and sounding like a diesel, but it went away when I reeved it up. It did it twice after that so I took it back up to the dealer and they had it for 2 weeks and replaced the cam phasers and solenoids ( which you will find is a common problem) so I picked it up and as I got home that night and backed it up in my driveway it did it again. I took it back up to them the next day and they had it for another 2 weeks except this time they replaced the entire engine with a remand ford one. I have now put 30,000 on the new one and the truck runs great very strong and good power. So that is my 5.4 story.

Holy cow. Frustrating for you at first I know but it worked out. If this one goes I am not sure if I will rebuild this one or buy a new or remanufactured one to put in it. I would like to have some more power. I'm sure I can rebuild this one and get some good power.
