Little engine that could
Just did a 24 hour round trip to Terre Haute, IN to pick up the Pilot which is my heaviest load to pull with my truck so far. The trailer 2100 lb. + Pilot 4400lb. = 6500 lbs. which is 400 over what Ford recommends on my set up. It was fun climbing those Missouri hills at 50 with the engine screaming.
I mostly kept it at 55 (or slower) and managed to get 12.6 MPG with OD off of course. I was very surprised at that.
Hmm, sitting close to level here. I like it...

Anyway, it was fun. Just thought I'd share since we don't hear much about towing with the 4.6.

Basically it's a higher gear that allows the engine to run at lower rpms while cruising at higher speeds.
If used while towing your transmission will often jump between overdrive and 4th. This is not good for the transmission at all! So when towing make sure your "overdrive off" light is on.
It's also useful to turn od off when going down hills.
Google it a bit there is lots of good info out there.
