Default knocking with edge evolution

I got my edge evolution on my 05 f150 screw with the 5.4l, today I niticed it was knocking just a little when in level 2 tow mode, I wasn't towing anything just seeing what a difference I could notice. I run just regular unleaded, could that be the problem or could I adjust the timing a litrle to get rid of it, if so wich way do I go??

You adjust the timing to the plus side when increasing the Octane. I believe its +.5 for every Octane point, so if you run 89 octane instead of 87, you can increase the timing by +1 (this is on the "safe" side). Level 2 with nothing else adjusted should be fine with 87 Octane. I ran 89 Octane on level 2 tow mode with +2 timing advance, and never had a knock.

But in tow mode running 87 octane I get the knock, would I need to back the timing back a little?

Hi.

Yes, you could - and probably should to avoid damage.

The knock-sensing systems in these trucks should be pulling timing if any detonation is detected already - the fact that you can still hear it suggests it's out of range of that system to correct for, and THAT is not good at all.

Find and correct the root cause(s) of the issue, as running retarded is going to kill power, and affect mileage.

Common causes - lack of maintenance old/lazy front O2's, dirty fuel filter, clogged cats, dirty MAF & TB, worn plugs, bad gas, carbon deposits in the chambers, etc, etc.

Meanwhile - it may be better to go back to the stock tune until yer vehicle is repaired.

good luck

I agreed with MGD. Before ever putting a tuner on a vehicle, make sure it is in prime operating condition with all maintenance up to date and any little issues addressed. Otherwise, what good is a tune?

It should NOT ping/knock with 87 Octane on Level 2 tow mode, you have a underlying issue.

I just had my 100k plug change, oil change and fuel filter before I installed my edge. It is a VERY slight knock I only noticed it as I was accelerating while going under a bridge. Changed tunes and ran back under the same bridge and no knock. Back to tune 2 andi t came back, like I said its VERY slight but there. Should it have thrown a code??? I haven't checked yet.

You need to retard the timing then. Back it off .5 and take it for a drive, if it's still there, back it off another .5

A major mis-fire would throw a CEL, have the Edge scan for a problem.

Hi.

You could have pending codes that the Edge cannot pull ( and no CEL).

Are your front 02's original? If so, they should be replaced regardless. Tuning very much depends upon accurate and responsive A/F info.

Replace with Motorcraft only (good prices on Rockauto.com, btw).

Here's why: http://vmptuning.com/forum/showthread.php?t=825

Meanwhile use the tune that is Not pinging - assume that is yer Stock tune? If you don't, you risk damage. If you hear it, it's FAR too much ( knock sensing system remember?).

You need to fix the cause. No way around that. Running higher octane is just masking the problem, not fixing it.

good luck

PS - what brand gas are you using? If it's not a Tier one, that can be a contributor.

My O2's are original guess I'll start there. Economy tune 1 on the edge does not ping or knock so I guess I'll run that. As far as "tier 1 gas" idk I just fill up wherever is cheapest ya know but never had any issues. And by the way thanks for all the info.
