I changed my rear diff fluid today and put in 85/140 valvoline synthetic blend and ford friction modifier. Also used brake cleaner to clean it up a bit. All is well. I agree something else is wrong.

If it howled before and still howls now, one of the bearings in the rear end is most likely bad. I would pull the cover back off and visually check the bearings in the rear end. Not uncommon on these trucks.
