Is it possible to put a 5.4 in a 4.6?

no, you cannot put a 5.4 inside a 4.6, its not physically possible
but im sure its possible to pull the 4.6 out and put a 5.4 in its place, although its probably be a much better choice to sell the truck and get one with a 5.4 if thats what youre after

also , on a half ton truck, i would pay more attention to how much torque the motor makes at low rpm, rather than peak horsepower numbers. peak numbers are more for bragging rights. you want a flat torque curve at the lowest possible rpm in a truck

Agreed. Pay attention to the torque on a pickup. I would never swap in a 4.6 Love my truck, but 5.4 (2008) would have been the way to go.

^This. Even if the 4.6L is junked, it's easier to put a 4.6 back in its place. It can be done though. There's been a few 4.6L to 5.4L 3V swaps and even one 4.6L to 5.4L 2V in the NBS. Depends on the reason for swapping, goals of the swap, and your skill level to do it.
