help with purchase decision
I am going to look at an 2006 f150 this morning. 80,000 miles.....my concern is with the up coming spark plugs issue.
If its a 4.6L I am OK....No spark plug issues...Correct ?
If its a 5.4L ....... run ?
How do you identify if motor is 3 Valves per cylinder ?
Thanks,
Its a really good price through a whole seller friend of mine.....he is trying to help me out since my 99 F150 has blown head gaskets, and I just thinking of upgrading.....but dont want to get into $1000.00 spark plug changes !!

I wouldn't run from the 5.4! Remember the 5.4l is a tried and proven awesome engine. The spark plug problems that you here about are extreme cases with trucks having over a 100k miles. Not ever truck has this problem. If you get this truck and your mechanically incline I recommend doing it right away yourself. It is not difficult to do. I just recently changed mine out at 95xxx miles with no issues. Good luck
That 2006 falls into the spark plug issue. It would be a correct assumption that 80K is not the required due date for spark plug replacement, but they will need to be replaced when you get to the 100K mileage range. I'll assume you'll still be the ownerl. So consider that expense into your decision.
Maybe this owner already did a spark plug change to the newer plugs? Check for other maintenance issues, such as automatic transmission fluid changes, oil change schedules, etc. If the automatic transmission fluid has not been flushed, then some say it's too late to do it at 80K, as it can cause built up crud to be dislodged. I'm a firm believer in requiring maintenance proof. If this trucks current owner cannot provide the records, I'd continue looking. There are lots of trucks for sale out there.

Its a 4x2 truck, I can buy it for $11,000.00 ....... Its a 5.4 , the stories of class action law suites
And alot of guys posting nightmare stories.....having to pull heads to change original plugs,
Think I am going to pass on this truck.

Well, after considering all..... I bought the truck, we will see in time if I am happy with the choice I made.
Really is a nice truck for the money, 1 owner. Pulled car-fax....No issues !

Don't be too worried, the majority of the stories about pulling heads were prior to the widespread use of the extraction tool. Shop around and see if you can get a decent price on the plug change if you start seeing any plug related symptoms as you get closer to the 100k point.
