Default Help! Help, help help help pleaseee

I've got a 06 Lincoln Mark LT, bought just last Feb. Its got 82000 miles on it. Had no problems last winter. I live in Northern Maine, we had our first big storm two days ago, its get real cold and we get a foot of snow. That day, I noticed some misfires in my first and second gears and abnormal rubbing sounds, like maybe a belt or something. I take it to the shop, they scan and say cylinder 6 misfire, replace the plug with a platinum plug and then the corresponding coil. Now it sounds good like it used to. The next day, yesterday, im driving, and the engine cuts out, completely stalls. I start up and it runs for a bit fine. I notice a small tapping and low end noise from the engine. Im driving at about 30, stop at a light, and the engine cuts out again, and it says low oil pressure. I start it back up, and its fine, but now is cutting out frequently. I take it to the shop, they plug me in and we drive it around the block. at first it says cylinder 5 misfire, and then the graph is all over the charts. We pull back into the shop, and there is a much louder knocking coming from the drivers side low end of the engine. The mechanic says from what he see's the engine is toast. He says, "we usually throw these engines away at 100000 miles. They dont last long this happens to them, we've had alot of problems with this one and I think its done for." Can anyone please give me some advice? i was everything from, maybe changing just the one plug and coil is throwing all the rest out of timing? Or maybe fuel filter is clogged, bad fuel injectors? A thinner oil because it got really cold? or the cam phaser problem everybody is talking about? I have no clue, any incite would be greatly appreciated. I neeeeed this truck to be running because winters up here are brutal. I just bought the truck put only 15k miles on it since February, and owe a ****ton and this happens! Thanks everybody!

The cutting out could be the fuel module. It has a aluminum case and is mounted up over the spare and corrods. It will cause all type of drive issues and its about the right mileage for it. As for knocking have your oil analyzed for metal, and our use an listening scope to here for rod and bearing noises.

I agree^^first thing to check with erratic running and stalling is the FPDM. Many threads on this. I also recommend finding a new mechanic, these engines are not disposable at 100,000 miles. That's just an uneducated statement to say the least!

This is true, years ago I put Autolite plugs in a Windstar and it refused to run on them. I don't know what makes Motorcraft plugs so different from other brands but there is certainly a difference!

My motor when the timing tensioner went out sounded like a intermittent rod knock. Also, it would cut out from time to time, especially when coming off the highway to a stop.

Thanks everybody great info I know where to start at least now. Motorcraft doesn't make the FPDM do they? What is the recommmended brand of them for the truck? Also, why are the motorcraft spark plugs so friggin expensive! Anybody know a place to get em cheap?

Doorman makes a acceptable FPDM
Rock Auto for the FPDM and plugs make sure you change the COP boots too

I'm thinking that if you can't do the troubleshooting and at least some of the work yourself, you need to find a different mechanic. The 5.4's do have some potential issues - however, they are not throw away engines. There are many still running strong way beyond 100,000 miles. Read some of the postings where guys are over 300,000 miles.
Sounds like your guy just threw up his arms and decided to sell a new or rebuilt engine.
