Just had a shop do a timing job. New chains, new guides, cast iron ratcheting tensioners, etc. Cost a pretty penny. The day I picked it up there was a loud whining noise, almost grinding. I immediately turned around and had the shop look at it. They thought it was the power steering that was going out.
well, today I took off the belt and had my wife run the truck at 1500 RPM to replicate the noise. SURE ENOUGH! It's coming from the valve cover.
What could it be? They didn't replace phasers and when they were inside, they found no issue with medal on medal or any abnormal wear. I'm going back, but I need some pointers.
Why didn't they replace the cam phasers? That's something you're supposed to do when doing the timing job. Either way, that noise might be the chain?
Ask the shop! I asked them 1000 times why they didn't want to replace the oil pump or the phasers to the point I was annoying them. They told me they can see if there's play in the phasers. They stated mine didn't need replacing, and to be fair I didn't have any phaser noise. I insisted on changing the oil pump to a Melling 360HV, which they claim they did (They better have, I shipped them the part)
It does sound like chain. What in the world could it be grinding on?
The customer is always right, and hindsight is always 20/20. To be honest, you should have found another mechanic if they refused to do what you asked.
Its probably grinding on the chain guides. Only thing I could think of. Did they send pictures of them putting new parts on?

No pics of the "after", I wish. Chain guide would explain it, it sounds horrible.
If it is the chain guide, is there a wrong way to install them? I guess I'm confused how a plastic chain guide would sound. Any way, I'm raising hell on Monday.
Well, what you see of the old ones in the picture is the correct way to install them. I'm not sure if its possible to install them upside down, or have the left on the right and vice versa.
Any mechanic shop that let one leave their place sounding like that -- tells the whole story about them. Most especially if it didn't sound like (or worse) than that on arrival. I can't think of anything associated with the chains that would make such a sound without tearing 'whatever it is' up in a few minutes. I wonder if it could be a Roller/Follower???

No kidding. That's ridiculous.
Not a follower. Faster than that would be moving. Sounds more like the chain rubbing against something as it zips by. Not sure what that might be.
I think you have no choice --pull valve covers . Drop oil pan and look for ground up aluminum --clean oil pump pu . That orig pic of engine sure looked rusty or was that georgia clay . Looked dry and rusty to my old eyes . No way that engine should have left the shop that way .You may have to check oil pressure with external gauge. When you pull valve covers is it oily . I don't know your miles on this engine but If many lashs and rollers should have been new .
I question how bad this engine was to start with. Excessive crank end play means a reman not a rebuild or very bad valve train means same .
I see you were talking reman at one point at least you get 3 yr warranty with that.
When you drop oil pan a lot will tell ,thrust washers mean reman if there . I hope this engine was cleaned inside but I doubt it You can be rough with oil pump and damage it on installation also .
Let us know we can give you some things to look at on phasors .
