Grinding noises
#11
So I finally got my truck back after another full day of them "not hearing" the noise so they can't pinpoint it. I literally drove off the lot and could hear the noise so they either 1. Didn't touch it all day or 2. Really have no idea what it is. I mentioned the hub and they said "oh no it's not that. We know the sound of that". So I'm going to try the other ford dealership in my city. I did try switching it into 4x4 and the noise is still there.. Any ideas ?

First, read my thread here: https://www.f150forum.com/f72/how-di...m-esof-186872/
You will get a good understanding of how the system works and will likely recognize the conditions under which your problem is happening. Then, find the IWE vacuum solenoid on the firewall behind the battery. There is a pic of it in that thread (page 3 I think?). Unplug the ELECTRICAL to that solenoid. You won't be able to lock the transfer case into 4x4, but that will lock the IWEs to the hubs (assuming the IWEs are not corroded inside so that they won't move). Then drive your truck again. If the sound is gone, it's related to the 4x4 vacuum system. If it's still there, start looking elsewhere. I suspect one or more of your vacuum check valves are bad (also detailed in that thread). Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks so much for you help guys! I tried telling them it was the hub but they disagreed over and over. I can't wait to get it fixed and go take the bill over to them and show em how dumb they are

Unplugging the solenoid will almost always eliminate the 4x4 system as the problem. The only way it could still be a problem is if
1 The solenoid is stuck. Unplug the solenoid vacuum next. Cap the engine side. Drive it and repeat the test.
2 One or both IWEs are internally corroded and the spring collar is frozen in place. You would have to remove the IWEs to check. There are links in my thread on how to do this, and it's not difficult.
