Grinding/Clunking Sound in Reverse?
Hey all,
I have an 08 xlx 35" tires, 3.55 gears. Recently when I put it into reverse and turn I get this weird grinding/clunking sound. At first I thought I hit something but I didn't. Now everytime I turn while in reverse it happens. Any ideas?

i had this happen every time i went into reverse when i first got my truck. turns out the parking brakes were out of adjustment, and actually weren't even hooked up. so basically, crawl under your truck and see if both of the parking brake cables are hooked up. if not, then most likely you'll have to re-adjust the parking brakes and/or get new ones. i adjusted mine so they wouldn't make that noise in reverse, but they still wont stay hooked up. every time i release the parking brake, they snap unhooked. i have the replacement shoes to put on, but havent gotten around to putting them one due to the fact that my truck needs new axle shaft seals. so theres no point in gettting oil all over the new shoes.
The key here is "while turning" I think.
If you can drive the truck forward or backward, in a straight line, and it doesn't make the noise, but it DOES do it while turning, I would bet it's you spider and/or side gears in the differential, or the clutches if you have a limited slip differential.
The cheapest way to check that is to pull the diff cover, inspect the gears in the differential case for missing, broken, or worn teeth, replace the cover with fresh fluid, and DO NOT FORGET THE FRICTION MODIFIER additive.
Drive it for a day or 2, making plenty of tight turns. If the noise goes away, it was the clutches.
Pretty common problem, when the proper fluid isn't used in these differentials.
Also, you could check for worn universals on the driveshaft, and your transmission crossmember being loose. These won't make a grinding noise, but WILL make a clunk when changing direction, or getting on and off the gas pedal.

Well it could be either one of these because number one my parking brake light nevers goes off and I have had some trouble with it in the past and number two it could be my diff because I have 35" tires with 3.55 gears and it could be wearing down...
now for some inspecting
