Default GOTTS mod alterative????

Ok this is where I show my lack of knowlege in this area. I was looking at the write up on how to do the gotts mod and looking at my air intake. The one used in the write up shows a filter with in the air intake tube. I have a 2004 with the 5.4. My air filter sits on top of the engine. My qusetion is could i just remove the air intake tube that goesfrom the fender to the filter box and be good? I have attached pics of where my filter is and my engine with and without the intake tube. Thanks in advance.

that's gonna be alot of warm air. especially while in stop and go traffic without any air movement.

Now you are just sucking in hot engine bay air. You are better off putting the tube back on. That will also be fairly loud I would guess. Gotts mod is really simply, just do a search.

The crucial point on this modification is where the intake goes into the fender. By removing the entire piece, you have increased air flow, but it will be the warm air present in your engine compartment. The idea is to replace the plastic piece that goes into the fender with a piece of pvc of a larger diameter, thus increasing air flow. It will continue to use the cooler ambient air inside the fender well, while remaining safe, secure, and clean. If you do a little more research on the modification, you should find specific instructions on the 5.4 as well. It is a very simple and effective action to take, and it is worth doing right. Is there any documentation of intake temps with a cai, gotts, and stock, vs ambient?

Thanks guys for the quick response. I was kinda figuring that it was not the best idea but thought I would ask. Looks like I will be doing the GOTTS mod.

I've seen it somewhere (as well as dyno runs), may have been on another forum, though.

the other thing you can do is take a dremel...knife or something and remove the bladders on the outside of the tube. They are put there to cause restriction and turbulence. Then do the mod to the tube into the fender. Make sure to cover the holes when you remove the bladders, or it will defeat the purpose.

the idea is to have the smoothest transition for the cooler air to travel from the fender well to the intake.

I thought about that, any ideas on what i could use to cover up the holes?

You could use an adhesive insulating/reflective tape on the whole thing. It'd be a little ugly, but it would lower your IATs.
