no no no....air that comes from the fenderwell is much cooler than air that is pulled from directly under the hood. especially at a stop light when you are standing still.
the difference can be as much as 30* which makes a big difference. if it didnt make any difference you would see an air filter that sits right off the throttle body. no tubes that run into the fenders or down under the headlight.
im pretty sure in south texas the temp. difference isnt much. and as far as the air filter on the throttle body, how many other things can you think of and say why do they do this or that? Im more than positive my truck dosent need cat. converters, or a tiny motor that gets sh!tty gas mileage.

It's more than you think of difference. In my experience running an open v. closed element the open filter can still be over 6 degrees warmer than ambient temperatures at cruising. At the stop light the air upon acceleration and for some time after is 10-30 degrees warmer than an enclosed compartment. This warmer air isn't helping power or fuel efficiency.
