Default The Good, Bad and the Ugly

Doing some research. I have been a Lightning guy for the past 7 years and my last 150 before was a 2001. I am considering the 2004 to 2008 model with 4x4 and either 4dr or extended cab. I know the 2004 model is known to have cam phaser issues and I will stay away from the entry years as they have several bugs as the Lightning and its 4 thread heads. What should I avoid and look for in year specific issues?

if your buying an 04-08 5.4 3v. find an 07/08 with an engine build date past 10/07.. this motor with the redisgned heads solved some major problems.

Thanks, I wondered when they fixed that issue. Did Ford ever do a recall or tech service bulletin on it?

they fixed some stuff on motors built after Oct. 2007... stuff like a redesigned head so the spark plugs would be 1 peice and not break off in the cyclinder head... up-graded the VTC and timing componets. not sure what all if any more.. there are TSBs out on the older motors..

My "08" has a build date of 10/07. Everything was updated in 7/09 per Ford. Not sure if it was a recall or not, but that's info I'm happy to know.

How does one determine the build date, I assume the serial number but where is it found and is it easily visible ?

I'm looking for a newer truck and the spark plug thing kind of bothers me.

If replacement complete heads are available, whats the cost for a pair ?

thanks

If you know the VIN, there are URL's listed on this site on other threads that allow you to plug in the vehicles VIN, and get its options list that it came with from the factory, along with its build date.

you can find the engine build date on a sticker affixed to the valve cover..if this sticker is missing, then do what Bucko mentioned... another dead give a way is the COP boots are brown vice black...
