That's odd mine is a mute button. Check your menu and see if you have the item turned on......it will show up after the clock settings if I'm not mistaken.

If you have Sync on your truck, that button is for hands free calling on your cell phone. But you must first "Pair" your cell phone with the Sync System. Your owner's manual will tell you how to do that.

That's why they make owners manuals...

Page 20 of my 2005 owners manual describes this button (labeled #2) as:

2.
Phone/mute: Press to mute the

playing media. Press again to return

to the playing media.

So, depending on the year of your truck and/or radio type, it may be labled "Phone" or "mute", but at least for the 04 to 05's it simply mutes the playing media. Since the original post did not specify what year their truck is, I can only suggest he/she check their owners manual.

Don't have one? We post this link at least once a month to show you can download one fro free:

I have the same issue with my FX2 its not a mute button and the owners manual says when you push the phone button it will say "no phone", nothing further. I have an 08, i think since they use the same radios for all the models(for the most part) if you don't have bluetooth with the truck the button is just a "dummy button"

Well if you notice bucko it says FX2 owners and the FX2 model didn't come out until 2007.. So that pretty much says it's either an 07 or 08. And the OP stated he read the manual as did I and no where in the manual does it mention anything about this button.

I have an 07 XLT and have this too. I thought it was a mute button for when your cell rings, you press it to mute the stereo before answering your phone so there is no background noise. Just my two cents.

That head unit is the same one in the Ford Fusion which, in 2008, was available with Sync.
From the Fusion manual:
2. (Phone): If your vehicle is equipped with SYNC (late availability), press to access SYNC PHONE features. Refer to your SYNC supplement for further
information. If your vehicle is not equipped with SYNC, the display will read NO PHONE."
