Check the vacuum valve on fire wall pass side that engages the hubs for 4x4. Ford updated that part and but a shield on it to prevent water from leaking in. If it bads it going to sound like a bearing going out because the hubs are trying to engage, and it about 20 bucks and 5 min job to replace. If you look back on older posting there is more info regurding this.
Good Luck

went to my local garage today! He looked at my truck an told me the vacuum line went and now hubs are grinding and leaking!! So I took my truck to the dealer. I bought the truck one year ago used, 2004 FX4 38,000 when I drove off the lot. Now 43,000. he said that YES the warranty covers it. It goes in the shop tomorrow morning.

Default same problem

I have a 2005 F150 with 70k and hearing a weird noise from the front as well but I am not sure if it is the same noise as posted here. It is only intermitant and only when there is a little torque on the engine. The best way to describe the sound is that it sounds like an old pair of roller skates with metal wheels. As soon as I let off the gas a bit, sound goes away. Had it looked at and there was nothing leaking and everything up front sounded tight. The sound does seem to be coming from the front end.

Thanks!
